SEVEN

Chaos reigned in the room. Screams tore from both Ryan and Shelby, though hers was louder and lasted far longer. Ryan lay on his back, staring up at the ceiling, taking ragged breaths.

I’d somehow wound up beside him, though I was sitting against the wall, one hand over my chest trying to still my rapidly beating heart. I have no idea if I screamed or not. All I could hear was them and when those sounds trailed off, there was a whooshing noise through my mind that told me I might be in shock.

Thankfully, Shelby was still cuffed to the floor because from the way she stared at me, if she could have killed me, she would have.

“What–” Ryan breathed. “What did you do?”

I closed my eyes and took a few more deep breaths, trying to unscramble my brain and tell him what just happened. Not that I knew too much more than he did. As I opened my mouth to speak, the door flew open and two other officers flooded the room.

“March!” one of them barked. “You okay?” No guns had been drawn yet, but he held a Taser at his side as he scanned the room, looking for danger.

Shelby took this opportunity to let out a screech that made us all wince before she started screaming about her rights and how she was attacked. Ryan, still lying on the floor, turned his head to look at me. “Kate?” He grimaced at the hoarseness in his voice. “You okay?”

I nodded. “Everything is fine,” I croaked as I struggled to stand. “Shelby is a Siren, and she keeps making everyone forget.”

Ryan blinked, his brow furrowing. He sat up slowly, holding his head in his hands. “That’s what it was,” he murmured to himself. “Something felt off, but I couldn’t remember.” He glanced over at Shelby, who still didn’t look worried.

But she should be. I completely severed the link, and I could be wrong, but I didn’t think she’d be able to get it back. Whether he was immune or not was to be seen, but as soon as that smile curved over her lips and she began to speak again, I watched for that glazed look to come over Ryan’s face.

It took Shelby longer to realize it than Ryan. One of his eyebrows went up. “Gentleman,” he said to the officers, “I’ve got it. You might want to step out until we get Shelby…handled.”

Her eyes went wide as she realized her powers weren’t working on him anymore. “What did you do?” she hissed at me.

Ryan stood and shut the door behind them before he turned to Shelby. “You might want to get comfortable. After this stunt, you’ll be here a while.”

Shelby bared her teeth, but Ryan ignored her. He held his hand out for me and once I straightened up, he bent down close to Shelby and re-cuffed her hands. “Your visitor privileges are revoked until further notice.”

Shelby glared at him with hatred in her eyes, but as she settled herself back into the chair, she shrugged.
